Country of Origin

United States

  • Indian Origins

The inspiration for Worcestershire sauce originated in India where it was most likely first made with hing, then found its way to England, where it was altered to suit English ingredients, then popularized and sold commercially since 1837.

  • Vegan Worcestershire Sauce

While most recipes use anchovies for their signature taste, it’s very unlikely that the original version from India used dried fish. It's far more likely it was vegan and made with hing, so we like to think of our recipe as the most authentic.

  • Better Ingredients

Our Hing Recipe Worcestershire sauce uses rich, luscious jaggery instead of white sugar, plus Indian spices to give our sauce a full-bodied authentic flavor. Please note: all ingredients are organic except hing, which grows wild and is ineligible for organic certification.

  • Suitable for all Diets

We wanted our product to be enjoyable for everyone, so we created a gluten-free, vegan Worcestershire sauce that is also made with organic ingredients.

The History of Worcestershire Sauce

Worcestershire sauce was brought to the commercial market by John Wheeley Lea and William Henry Perrins, two chemists (pharmacists) who formed the company, Lea & Perrins in the city of Worcester, in Worcestershire, England. Theirs was the first sauce to bear the name “Worcestershire”; they sold their first commercial bottle in 1837. Their original ingredients included tamarind, vinegar, anchovies and most assuredly asafetida (hing), an aromatic little spice virtually unknown to the West at the time.

According to the company, the sauce came from “the recipe of a nobleman in the county,” Lord Marcus Sandys, the ex-Governor of Bengal who tasted the sauce while dining with friends in India. The story goes that when Lea & Perrins first mixed the recipe together it was too strong and unpalatable so they left it stored in a barrel in the basement. A few years later they rediscovered it, tasted it again and loved it - it had naturally fermented and had become quite tasty.

Yet fermented fish sauces are not as abundant in India as they are in other Asian countries like Vietnam or China, so it was unlikely that the original sauce Lord Sandys sampled in Bengal was a fermented anchovy sauce. It's far more likely that the original Indian version was a vegan Worcestershire sauce featuring tamarind and hing (asafoetida).

Although Lea & Perrin’s was the first sauce to be called “Worcestershire”, theirs is not made with over 99% certified organic ingredients, nor is it vegan.

Common Questions

Is Worcestershire Sauce gluten free?

Ours is! But many other brands out there are not. Even though our gluten-free Worcestershire sauce is manufactured in a gluten-free facility, we still test each batch.

Why make a vegan Worcestershire Sauce?

While other brands are frequently made with fermented anchovies, we believe the original Worcestershire sauce eaten in India was NOT a fish sauce, so we made ours without it and used Hing instead.

Is your Gluten-Free Worcestershire Sauce keto?

While ours does contain some carbs from tamarind and jaggery (Indian unrefined evaporated cane juice), it can still be eaten on a keto diet in moderation.

Are soy sauce and Worcestershire Sauce the same?

No! While they are both dark, thin asian sauces packing an umami punch, they are two totally different sauces. Soy sauce is made from fermented soy beans and tastes salty and vaguely nutty. Meanwhile Worchestershire sauce is made from vinegar and tamarind and tastes tangy and mildly sweet.

Does your vegan Worcestershire Sauce need to be refrigerated?

Refrigerate after opening.

Is your Hing Recipe Worcestershire Sauce spicy?

Only mildly. Ours has a hint of cayenne pepper to balance the flavors, but we would not consider it hot.

How do you pronounce Worcestershire?

WOO-stuh-shur
