Using Ghee for Massage

 

I recently learned about a boy who had been described as constitutionally weak since birth. A new nanny began giving him a daily massage with pure ghee, following a traditional Indian practice. Within a month, those around him observed noticeable improvements in his overall appearance, including brighter-looking skin.

In Ayurveda, the classical system of health described in texts such as the Ashtanga Hridayam, daily oil massage (abhyanga) is a long-standing self-care practice traditionally used to support comfort, circulation, and overall well-being. Ghee (clarified butter) is regarded in Ayurveda as sweet (madhura) and cooling in nature, and is traditionally described as nourishing to the body’s tissues when properly used.

When applied externally, it is valued for its soothing qualities and is often used to help keep the skin feeling soft, smooth, and well-lubricated.

Some traditional Ayurvedic teachings describe ghee as supportive of healthy aging when incorporated appropriately into a balanced diet and lifestyle consistent with one’s individual constitution (prakriti) and digestive capacity (agni). Grass-fed organic ghee naturally contains fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamins A, D, E, and K in varying amounts. As part of a varied diet, these nutrients contribute to normal physiological functions in the body.
