Urad Dal is also known as Black Gram. It has its origins in ancient India where it was first cultivated and has remained a staple ever since. It’s a main ingredient in many famous Indian dishes including Dosas, Idli, Papadums and Dal Makhani. Urad Dal is sold as either a “black lentil” which is usually the whole bean, or a “white lentil” which has the black skins removed to reveal a creamy white interior. Urad Dal is a very nutritious bean, containing plant protein, fiber, low-glycemic carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Our Certified Organic Urad Dal is split and husked so the skins are removed. The flavor is mildly earthy and slightly sweet. Try it in a variety of dishes including soups, stews, curries, bean burgers, bean spreads, stir-fries, and a variety of vegetarian dishes.
