Country of Origin

Japan

  • Non-GMO Natto Beans, Straight from Japan

We traveled to Japan and spent a lot of time speaking with producers of natto, some who have been operating for generations. During our research, we learned that organic vs non-organic soybean does not make a difference in the nutritional value of Japanese natto. What is important is that the natto soybeans used are not GMO or bioengineered, as well as the quality of the culture used.

  • Freeze-Dried Natto Preserves Nutrients

Freeze-dried Natto offers a gentler aroma and a crisp texture, all while retaining the nutritional advantages of traditional Japanese natto. It's perfect for those who want the benefits of eating fresh, probiotic-rich natto, but don't like its usual texture. Some enjoy freeze-dried natto beans as a snack or as a topping for rice or noodles, while others prefer it mixed with mustard and soy sauce for added zest. These dried fermented soybeans can also be reconstituted with a few hours of soaking and eaten like fresh natto.

  • Naturally Probiotic & Prebiotic

Packed with beneficial bacteria and fiber-rich goodness, this traditional Japanese freeze-dried natto is good for your gut.

  • Excellent Source of Vitamin K2

Non-GMO Natto is often hailed as the richest known source of Vitamin K2, higher even than grass-fed dairy and grass-fed beef liver!

Meet Natto — Japanese Fermented Soybeans

Natto beans are a nutrient-rich, protein-packed, probiotic superfood from Japan.

A traditional Japanese dish made by fermenting steamed soybeans with Bacillus subtilis spores, natto is renowned for its unique taste and health benefits. Its distinctive aroma and slimy texture might seem unusual at first, but many find its savory flavor quite addictive. Rich in protein, vitamins, and probiotics, natto is considered a nutritious addition to any diet.

If you're feeling adventurous, give our Japanese natto a try – you might just discover a new favorite dish!

How to Make Soft Natto Beans with Rehydration

  1. Place 10g of freeze-dried natto beans from the bag into a bowl. The powder in the bag is freeze-dried Bacillus natto kinase. Please use it together.
  2. Pour water to make the non-gmo natto just covered. If you rehydrate 10g of freeze-dried natto beans, it makes 40g of soft natto (the equivalent of one 40g pack sold commercially in Japan).
  3. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator for 3-4 hours.
  4. Remove from the refrigerator, stir and enjoy your soft Japanese natto. After rehydration, store in the refrigerator and consume within the same day.

WARNING: This Japanese Natto contains Vitamin K. If you are taking anticoagulant agents such as warfarin, please refrain from consuming it.

  • Adding water to a bowl of freeze-dried natto to begin the rehydration process and make soft natto.
  • A bowl of freeze dried natto being rehydrated and stirred with a spoon.
  • A bowl of non-gmo natto after being rehydrated.

Common Questions

Is natto a blood thinner?

Natto is made with fermented soybeans, which are rich in nattokinase, an enzyme that research shows may thin the blood and help break up blood clots. Because of this, it is believed that nattokinase may increase the risk of bleeding when used in combination with blood-thinning drugs. People on anti-coagulant medications should not risk eating natto.

Is your non-GMO natto vegan?

Yes! Our freeze-dried natto beans are entirely plant-based, perfect for vegans and vegetarians.

Why is natto so good for vegans?

Japanese Natto is the best source of Vitamin K2 out there, and it's even better for vegans because it's made from fermented soybeans. Other foods rich in Vitamin K2 are animal foods like grass-fed dairy and beef liver. It's also high in protein and fiber, as well as probiotics.

Is your freeze-dried natto sweet?

No. Unlike other natto, our Japanese natto has no additional seasonings like karashi added. It's therefore simply rich in umami without the slightly sweet, spicy, and sometimes bitter flavor of other other natto.

Are your non-GMO natto beans gluten-free?

Yes! That's because ours does not come with a seasoning packet or soy-sauce (which is usually the source of gluten in other Japanese natto).

Are natto and tempeh the same?

No. While both natto and tempeh come from soybeans that have undergone fermentation, they have distinctive contrasts in their flavor, aroma, and appearance.

What if I don't like the taste of your Japanese natto?

Our freeze-dried natto beans are a very traditional dish from Japan, with a flavor that may not appeal to everyone at first, as it is an acquired taste. We encourage you to be adventurous and give it a try! However, please note that we are unable to accept returns solely based on personal preference regarding its flavor.

What does Japanese natto taste like?

  • Clean, Light, Delicious.

For the third time in my life, I've fallen in love with a food completely unexpectedly. The first time was when I was around 10 years old. That year, my mother planted a vegetable garden, and when we were able to harvest the okra, tomatoes, and yellow squash, I reluctantly tried them and discovered that they were magical and delicious. They were nothing like the tasteless, cardboard vegetables I'd had from the store. Suddenly, my world opened, and I fell in love with produce.

Now, regarding Japanese natto, I remember it many many years ago and not being especially impressed. It was sticky, kind of earthy. Not particularly flavorful. Definitely "different." I didn't fall in love with it or care about trying it again. Fast forward about a decade, and now Sandeep has brought back this Non-GMO Natto from Japan and said we would offer it as a new product.

From the first spoonful of Pure Indian Foods Natto beans, I was struck by how clean it tasted. It tastes light, refreshing, like a very light soy sauce. Not salty at all, very minimally savory. Despite the light flavor, this non-gmo natto feels rich and deep. It made me want to eat more. The first time I made these fermented soybeans, I made the recommended 10g serving size. It was filling and I wasn't hungry afterward, but I wanted more anyway! This was the third time I fell for a food unexpectedly.

In case you're wondering what the second time was, Sandeep was also responsible. He brought back pure asafoetida, which we named our Best Hing Ever - and I'm telling you, it's the most beautiful aromatic hing I've ever smelled in my life. One thing I can count on with Sandeep is that he won't stop until he's found something truly outstanding, and only after it passes his standards will he offer it to customers.
