Raisins are an oatmeal cookie’s best friend! That’s especially true when it comes to Monukka raisins - they add plump sweet, “raisiny” flavor - but they’re not just for cookies. These versatile, nutritious little fruits will perk up a slew of sweet and savory dishes.
While it’s true that most raisins in the US come from commercially grown Thompson grapes, Monukka raisins come from black Monukka grapes that bear the same name. Unlike other raisins, however, their production is limited so they are not as readily available. In fact, they are mostly found at specialty stores and markets as well at natural-food stores.
Monukka raisins are larger than other varieties. They have tiny edible seeds (just a few in each raisin) that give them a nice, healthy little crunch - healthy because grape seeds contain health-promoting polyphenols, aka antioxidants. They keep well when stored in an air-tight container in the pantry, but if you live in a hot, humid climate, they can also be stored in the refrigerator.
We’ve specifically chosen Monukka raisins that come from organically grown, black, seeded Monukka grapes. The grapes are naturally dried in the hot sun which deepens their flavor and concentrates their natural sugars and good nutrition. Pure Indian Food’s Monukka raisins are certified-organically grown, non-GMO, raw and gluten free with NO added sulfites, ever! Use them interchangeably – in place of currants and other dried fruits in just about every recipe. Eat them alone as a delicious snack or try some of these ideas:
